The “Loonie” coins depict a graceful, black, swimming bird checked with white feathers and vibrant red eyes. Perhaps the reason the loon is so familiar to our friends to the north is that loons migrate north in the summer to find breeding grounds, and during the breeding season they become very conspicuous for their unique mating call. Anyone who has spent a night under the stars on the shore of a northern lake during summer knows that ghostly, piercing call.

Adult loons of mating age sport jet black feathers intermixed with white feathers to mimic the dappling light patterns under the gentle waves of northern lakes. To us the loon may look regal, dignified, and harmless, but to anything under the water’s surface, the Common Loon is a deadly and efficient hunter. The loon’s blood red eyes are very efficient in finding fish in the dark depths of glacial-formed lakes. They are like magicians, disappearing without a splash and staying underwater for minutes at a time, only to reappear far from where you last saw them.

Loons are also great fliers. They migrate over a thousand miles to Mexico, the Caribbean, or Florida every winter season and even maintain flight speeds of up to 40 mph for long stretches. It seems that the only thing that loons struggle with is walking on land. Their legs, positioned very far to the rear of their body, provide fantastic propulsion through the water, but on land they can barely manage an awkward stumbling gate.

Male and female loons look alike and mate for life. Together, they build a large nest and tend a brood of one to two chicks, which are able to swim and dive within a week. When they are little, the chicks often ride on the backs of a parents. But in a few short months, they are able to fly with their parents on the long journey south.

People in the south see the loon as a very different bird. The loon they see during winter months is a dull gray. All the distinctive black and white dotted patterns of feathers disappear until the next year’s trip north when they reappear. Why does this happen? To more perfectly blend in with their surroundings. How does this happen? It’s a process called molting. Once they arrive at their winter home, they lose all their feathers - a little at a time and during this process, which takes about a month, they are unable to fly and in the spring the process reverses. They produce a special oil which they use to preen their feathers, cleaning and waterproofing them. What an amazing amount of growing and shedding, and swimming and flying, and molting and preening these masters of camouflage do each year!

Climate change, invasive species, habitat loss, and overfishing have all been threats to the loon population. Loons rely on stable ecosystems with high bio-diversity to thrive. If we want our children and grandchildren to hear their spooky calls fill the night air above the lakes of the great north, then we must take action now to preserve our natural world.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0046/3421/4518/files/Anderillium-Avian-Ink-Common-Loon-Black-1_5-oz-Refill-Bottled-Ink-Robert-Oster.jpg?v=1686340402
anderillium-avian-ink-shoebill-stork-grey-1-5-oz
Anderillium Avian Ink - Shoebill Stork Grey - 1.5 oz

Get Inspired by Nature Oriented Anderillium Ink

Shoebill Stork Grey Ink of Avian collection by Anderillium!

A tall and terrifying bird, many people find the shoebill stork reminiscent of dinosaurs, and for good reason. The Shoebill Stork, like all of our modern birds, is descended from a group of dinosaurs called theropods which included the Tyrannosaurus rex. The shoebill is known to ornithologists as Balaenicps rex, or B-rex, meaning ‘the whale-headed king’, a reference to the bird’s most prominent feature. That giant bill is the stork’s main tool for hunting, but it comes in handy for a number of other uses also. Shoebills keep their eggs cool by scooping their bills full of water and pouring it over the nest. They also use the large hollow bill as a resonator for sound, but their "call” might not be what you expect. While shoebills have a syrinx (the bird equivalent of our voice box), they clap the upper and lower parts of their bill together rapidly to make a ‘machine gun’ sound that is very unique and carries quite far. So if you find yourself in the swamps of east Aftrica and hear something that sounds like gunfire, it might just be a B-rex caling for a mate or warning away a competitor. They need to be able to call over long distances because these birds are typically solitary and defend large territories. Those territories always include large areas of wetlands where B-rex can hunt. These birds specialize in watching and waiting for lungfish (yes they’re a thing) or frogs to surface for a breath in oxygen-poor water, at which point the birds snatch up their meal in a lightning fast grab with that strong crushing bill. Shoebills stay the same color for life, a medium grey with flecks of black on the tips of some feathers. Males and females are both the same color, even the juveniles are grey. While these birds are not remarkable for their grey color, they are quite remarkable and we should strive to safeguard their habitats so that they can continue their reign over the wetlands for many years to come.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0046/3421/4518/files/Anderillium-Avian-Ink-Shoebill-Stork-Grey-1_5-oz-Refill-Bottled-Ink-Robert-Oster.jpg?v=1686340415
anderillium-avian-ink-indigo-bunting-blue-1-5-oz
Anderillium Avian Ink - Indigo Bunting Blue - 1.5 oz

Get Inspired by Nature Oriented Anderillium Ink

Indigo Bunting Blue Ink of Avian collection by Anderillium!

The beautiful blue Indigo Bunting is a member of the cardinal family and shares a lot of traits with its red cousins. How does a bird navigate for thousands of miles at night? The same way our ancestors did, they use the stars. Quite intelligent for something that can fit in your hand. They use their intelligence to find the best food available as well. Meet the Roseate Spoonbill. Bright pink feathers, long neck and legs, and yes, a spoon shaped bill. You might be tempted to assume it is just a taxonomic hoax or something dreamed up from a child’s imagination but they’re real. Although there are a half dozen species of birds with spoon shaped bills, only one is pink. While mostly a South American bird, some do call Florida their home as well, and whenever we get a day to kayak out in the mangroves we always keep an eye out for that brilliant pink color. Spoonbills are closely related to ibises and both have a similar style of foraging for bugs and small critters by probing with their bills as they walk. Males and females of this species look the same, and they make their nests in the mangroves and bushes on the coast. Spoonbills form social groups and forage and roost in groups of a dozen or so all the way up to over a hundred individuals.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0046/3421/4518/files/Anderillium-Avian-Ink-Roseate-Spoonbill-Pink-1_5-oz-Refill-Bottled-Ink-Robert-Oster.jpg?v=1686340425
anderillium-avian-ink-american-goldfinch-yellow-1-5-oz
Anderillium Avian Ink - American Goldfinch Yellow - 1.5 oz

Watch Instagram Story I

Get Inspired by Nature Oriented Anderillium Ink

Introducing American Goldfinch Yellow Ink Avian by Anderillium!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0046/3421/4518/files/Anderillium-Avian-Ink-American-Goldfinch-Yellow-1_5-oz-Refill-Bottled-Ink-Robert-Oster.jpg?v=1686340427
